The Intimate Partner Violence Batterer Intervention Program (BIP) is a court-approved, trauma-informed course designed to help individuals recognize the root causes of abusive behavior, understand its impact on intimate partners, and develop healthier ways to engage in relationships. The program promotes personal accountability, emotional insight, and long-term behavior change.

Program Overview

Participants attend a weekly, 2-hour live group session via secure video conferencing using a phone, tablet, or computer. These sessions are led by trained facilitators and allow for real-time interaction and group discussion.

In addition to the group session, participants complete weekly online coursework, alternating between:

  • Guided written reflections to deepen understanding, and

  • Practical application assignments to reinforce behavior change in real-life scenarios.

Program Themes

In alignment with California Penal Code 1203.097(c)(1)(F), our IPV program incorporates culturally responsive and inclusive content. Major themes include:

  • Gender roles and societal expectations

  • Socialization and belief systems

  • The nature and cycle of violence

  • Power and control in intimate relationships

  • The impact of abuse on victims and family systems

  • Cultural norms and the intersection with oppression and violence

Program Content

This course is structured to promote insight and change through:

  • Accountability for harmful behavior

  • Reframing values, language, and beliefs associated with abuse

  • Guided practice of newly learned, nonviolent behavior

  • Discussion-based evaluation of progress within group sessions

Participants are encouraged to reflect on their experiences, share insights, and apply what they learn to their daily lives. The goal is not only compliance—but meaningful growth.

Course Formats

  • 16 - Week

    An early intervention course designed to raise awareness of harmful behavior, introduce healthy relationship strategies, and encourage personal responsibility. Ideal for lower-level offenses or first-time referrals.

  • 26 - Week

    A mid-level program that allows participants more time to examine emotional triggers, explore power dynamics, and practice behavior change strategies. Suitable for individuals with moderate risk or ongoing relational issues.

  • 52 - Week

    A comprehensive, long-term intervention for individuals with serious or repeated offenses. This program provides deep exploration of relationship patterns, sustained support, and guided skill development for lasting change and accountability.

Meets California Legal Requirements

This program satisfies requirements under California Penal Code 1203.097, including:

  • Section (B): Participation in ongoing group sessions

  • Section (F): Completion of structured educational programming

  • Structured Practicum: Real-world practice and accountability check-ins

Participants must attend all required sessions and complete coursework to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Online Group Video Sessions

Sessions are held at scheduled times each week. Attendance is required and monitored for credit toward completion. The group format fosters peer interaction and in-depth exploration of topics such as:

  • Physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse

  • Property destruction and acts that endanger others’ safety

  • Misconceptions about anger and abusive behavior

  • The anger and abuse cycle

  • Cultural normalization of violence
